World Pipe Band Championships 2009

The showpiece event of the Glasgow International Piping Festival (10–16 Aug, around Glasgow, www.pipingfestival.co.uk), is the World Pipe Band Championships. There are those who find the sound of the bagpipes an acquired taste to say the least, but many with a Scottish connection also find the massed sound of pipers and drummers in a pipe band particularly stirring - not surprising, considered these bands were historically first formed within military regiments.

Bard in the Botanics

Add a bit of culture to your Glaswegian visit with the latest instalment of the Bard in the Botanics series, al fresco stagings of some of Shakespeare’s greatest works. Now in its seventh year, the as-yet-unannounced programme will include versions of The Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth. Also featured will be what the organisers refer to as ‘a very exciting new production’ for the Kibble Palace, the late-19th century glasshouse which is one of the Botanics’ highlights. Loch Lomond

With only half an hour’s drive from Glasgow to its southernmost tip, a trip to the famous Loch Lomond is a good day out for visitors to the city, although dedicated outdoor types may find they want to linger for much longer. At 24 miles in length, the Loch (‘lake’ in Scots) is a great spot for watersports, fishing, hiking through the stunning surrounding hills, or just touring one of the most scenic spots in the country.

Glasgow Mela

First established in 1990, the Mela was intended as a family-friendly festival based on the traditions of India. Growing from an indoor event to a massive outdoor celebration with over 25,000 people now attending, the cultural boundaries of the Mela have expanded. Although this year’s programme hasn’t yet been announced, musical performances in recent years have included Jamaican reggae, Eastern European folk and Latin American styles, alongside a wide range of Indian-inspired activities.
