Squashed Tomatoes
What would you do with 100,000 kilos of over-ripe tomatoes? Here at The Midgie we quite like tomato soup, with a wee bit of basil. But each year, on the last Wednesday of August, the Vanecian town of Bunol plays host to the biggest food fight in the world – with thousands of participants throwing squishy tomatoes up and down the narrow streets. The event begins with the firing of a water rocket at 10am and then an hour of mayhem ensues, before the rocket fires again to signal the finish. By the end you are wading through a river of bright red soupy tomatoes. Sprig of basil optional.
