Midge

What are they?
Tiny little biting bugs that live off human blood, sucking from the skin and causing unpleasant swelling and itching (you did ask).

Can they be stopped?
Midgies don’t like the wind or garlic breath, so escape to a windy hilltop whilst munching fresh garlic cloves.

Top tip
Midgies are apparently more partial to some blood tastes than others, so if you experiment with what you eat there may be a food combination that makes you an unpleasant meal for these biting beasties.

Repellents?
It is thought that certain scents can put them off. People have tried all kinds of weird tactics, from burning sheep dung to carrying a sprig of elderflower. But the best repellant on the market seems to be Avon ‘Skin So Soft’, www.avon.uk.com
